In order to set ceramic tile flooring you will first need to stabilize the existing flooring material, and make sure you have a clean level flooring surface.  To begin you will need to have the existing flooring removed if it is carpeting, vinyl tile, or linoleum.  Once the old flooring is removed you will have exposed the ‘sub-floor’ material.

Wooden flooring may not need to be removed, and can be stabilized by simply covering it with a layer of ¼” plywood sheathing.  After cutting the plywood sheathing to size, attach it over the old flooring with a liberal application of adhesive glue, followed by setting in flooring screws very 6-8 inches.  By doing this, the old wooden flooring will not affect the ceramic tile flooring if it were to expand, contract, or shift in some way.

After having the sub-flooring made secure and level, a new base material called cement board is set in place.  Cement board replaces the old-school way of attaching metal lath to the sub floor and floating fresh mortar on top.  Cement board is so much cleaner and easier to use and install.

Cement board is available in1/4”, 3/8”, and ½” thicknesses, and is excellent for establishing a new sub-floor, ‘base’ for  ceramic  and marble tile.  Cement board is set on top of the prepared plywood surface, or original sub-floor material with screws especially designed for penetrating and holding fast without allowing back-threading up into the ceramic tile.  Once the cement board is in place, the ceramic tile can be set!
